The horizontal swirling flow spillway with shaft (HSFSS) is a new type of energy dissipation device. It has many advantages, such as easy to construct and arrange, high efficiency but low cost. The research to it has great significance not only on theory but also on practical usage. This article focus on the 3D math simulation of HSFSS by using the experiment results from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) of Gongboxia Hydropower Station. By analyzing the experimental results and using math simulation method, the choosing of meshing method and turbulence model are studied. The separate parts in HSFSS of Gongboxia Hydropower Station are simulated by using Realizable k-εturbulent model and VOF method. The Hydraulic characteristics of swirling flow are obtained by simulation and compared that to the experiment results. According to the pressure obtained by experiments, the results of math simulation are tested and verified. The pressure and velocity distribution in horizontal hole are discussed. The math simulation results of primary body type and optimization body type are compared. The experiment results are also compared to that. It is proved that the optimization body type is better in many aspects. On the basis of other people's research, the applicability of different turbulent model used in simulating the swirling flow is studied. Compared the simulation results of these model, it is found that the Realizable k-εturbulent model is better in simulating the swirling flow. Through the simulation of the HSFSS in Gongboxia Hydropower Station, the reliability and feasibility of HSFSS are verified. At the same time, as a new type of energy dissipation device, math simulation provides foundation to the design of HSFSS. This means a lot to the practical usage of HSFSS on the engineering.
