| The Hupingshan town is the settlements of tujia ethnic group. Most of the settlements' features is disappeared. Tujia customs is forgotten by the person, traditional houses have given way to the modern buildings. Only a few settlements in the deep mountains have preserved traditional style. According to the lose of rural settlements' characteristics of Hupingshan town,using the research methods of survey analysis and comprehensive multi-disciplinary to study the rural settlements of Hupingshan town, the design concept of "Mountain environment+Tujia raditional features" was proposed based on the in-depth investigation and the theory of Science of Human Settlement, Organic Renewal and Man-land relationship. The main research results are as follows:(1) Based on the survey of Hupingshan settlements, the natural resources, human resources and travel resources were analyzed. The environmental characteristics, social characteristics, structural characteristics were analyzed. The evolution of the settlements and the causes were studied; The problems such as small scale, disordered layout, buildings of various styles, inconvenient, lose of characteristic were proposed. Connotations such as nature, harmony, clan concept and layout features such as rich communication space and variety of compound forms were summaried. What'more, Huping rural settlements is devided into three styles:the free style, zonal style and group style.(2) Three styles of settlements space were studied, including the location, physical space and spiritual space of settlements.(3) In the end, the three styles of settlement space were designed respectively.Construction of rural settlement space can not copy the experiences of urban settlement construction. It must be based on the natural environment and cultural characteristics, depending on the geographical environment, and create a different space:free style in areas of steep terrain; zonal style in the narrow band region; group style in flat and wide region.
