With the development of economy, the quantity of vehicle is increasing. However the shortage of energy sources and the problem of environment pollution are more and more serious too. The compression proportion of diesel may reaches high and hot efficiency and the economy are better than petrol because of no limiting of burning and needing of diesel-oil's carbon dioxide. Now, the dieselize tendency of the vehicle's engine is quickened in the world, so we need to make a further research on diesel capability.Fuel injection and spray features affect the power, economy and emissions of engine. The research of fuel spray features is very important for engine to enhance its capability. Spray features of diesel include spray penetration distance, spray cone angle fragment length, drops diameter size and distribution and so on. The paper mainly researches two indexes of spray features:penetration distance and spray cone angle.According to the digital image processing technology, the paper uses the MATLAB software to make a program processing on the measurement of spray images. It has been mainly used the digital image processing theory in programming process that image type conversion, histogram, image enhancement, image segmentation, mathematical, morphology, binary image processing theory and so on.The paper has achieved the measurements of the spray cone angle and the penetration distance of the fuel spray through programming, and got the experience formula by using least square, and achieved the program interface design on the basis of the MATLAB/GUI software platform. The results show that bright images used in gray scope can assure the measuring error scope within 5% of spray cone angle and the measuring error scope within 1% of penetration distance. As for severally shadow images, using appropriate threshold value coefficient can make the measuring error scope within 5% of spray cone angle and the measuring error scope within 1% of penetration distance too, which has fully proved the program is feasible and credible.Finally, the paper has achieved the measurement of diesel spray features under different situations and got experience formula and made comparison on the result of measurements of the spray images in different circumstance pressure and rotary speed of diesel fuel injection pump.
