UV imaging is a new visualization method for detecting external insulation discharge of high-voltage electric equipment. This paper analysis instrument gain, the detecting distance to the UV imaging spot area and photon number influence through experimented. UV imaging spot area is proposed as a UV imaging characteristics for detecting discharge through comparing and analyzing. The UV imaging spot area of different instrument gain and different detecting distance, is normalized with the support vector machine method. Then the paper study the discharge characteristics for the water droplets and fittings of silicone rubber insulator by UV imaging device, and study the effect of corona discharge on the hydrophobicity of silicone rubber. Three characteristic parameters were extracted for Characterizing the pollution discharge with analysis the characteristics of UV imaging of pollution discharge, and the three parameters were as follows: the area of stable UV facula, the area of intermittent UV facula, and the repetition of intermittent UV facula. The insulator contamination condition evaluation model was established with the fuzzy logic inference method.
