Since the reform and opening-up, the port throughput is rising all the way. Port lighting has become an important part of power consumption, port power saving has became a tread. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are widely used in the port yard and roads for the high luminous efficacy, long life and good color rendering. However, electromagnetic ballasts for HPS lamps have drawbacks of low power factor, large size, poor power regulation. Moreover, electromagnetic ballasts can not monitor or control each HPS lamp remotely, so can not meet the demand of modern lighting development. So it is time to design a kind of electronic ballast with the characteristics of high power factor, high luminous efficiency and dimming. This research and design is based on it.In this thesis, categories and electrical characteristics of HPS are introduced briefly. The developing status and directions of electronic ballast are given. And compared with inductance ballast, the benefits of electronic ballast are analyzed. An active power factor correction (APFC) circuit and a inverter with resonant circuit are adopted as the dimming electronic ballast main topology. And it can make the ignition, power control and failure protection more convenient.The ignition of HPS lamps is one of the key to the research of electronic ballast. Several methods of ignition are introduced, and the pulse transformer is chose to ignite the high-power HPS lamp. It provides a thousands voltage of instantaneous pulse to ignite the lamps.Active power factor correction technology can restrain humorous waves of input current, and improve the power factor (PF) of electronic ballast efficiently. The dissertation introduces transition mode Boost PFC circuit and offers basis to design the parameters in the circuit suitably.The dissertation introduces the theory of acoustic resonance and the injection of low-frequency into high-frequency modulation can eliminate acoustic resonance in majority of metal halide lamps.Network management of lighting system is development tread in the future. There several dimming methods are introduced and the suitable method is chose. With the help of modern communication techniques, RS-485 communication mode is established, through which the control center can monitor and control the lamp remotely.
