Traffic accidents are regarded as one of the most serious social problems around the world. Although the average automobile ownership in China is relatively low, the traffic accident rate is high, which not only leads to huge loss of life and property but also causes other social problems. To make things worse, the situation is becoming even severer. Therefore, to provide objective analysis and judgment on traffic accidents have been an important research topic and of social significance. In this thesis, a portable accident vehicle trajectory reconstruction system is proposed and developed. In the system, equipment installed in vehicle is used to store the information of vehicle motion. Once the vehicle comes to a stop, the data can be retrieved to find the vehicle's position by trajectory reconstruction algorithm. The trajectory of the vehicle involved in accident can then be reconstructed and shown on a portable device. Both hardware and software of the on-board equipment are designed. And the software of the portable device is also designed. Test runs are directed to prove the stability and performance of the complete system. Experimental results show that the system can reconstruct the trajectory of the vehicle in the accident and achieve the expected goal. The system could assist police officers to deal with traffic accidents accurately by reproducing the trajectories of the vehicles involved in accidents. With this system, the causes of accidents could be analyzed in an objective way. In conclusion, such a system could be of great advantages to improve the efficiency and accuracy of accident analysis.
