Research On Renewal Of Old Industrial Buildings Towards Exhibition Buildings

Abstract:Nowadays many cities in China have emerged a lot of abandoned industrial buildings, which are facing the choice of to be demolished or reserved. That is due to:1) the center of some cities keep expanding and industrial districts used scattered around the edges of these cities now have been centralized; 2) traditional industries of some cities have declined and the industrial structure of these cities need to be adjusted; 3) some cities want to improve their environments and they carry out such policies as "change second industries for third industries", "turn polluted areas back to green lands". Previous practices used to demolish those old buildings and build other new buildings in situ, however, such behavior not only cause serious waste of money and resources but also do harm to the historical context of cities. That gives us a lesson and makes people reconsider the values of old industrial buildings'reusing, like social history, economic resources, ecological environment etc. By combining experiences of developed countries and the status of China, some widely used methods of old industrial buildings'renewal have been formed, one of which is the exhibition building. Because of its many similarities with old industrial buildings and its feature as a public place the exhibition building is regarded as a way to renew old industrial buildings with low investment, little damage and many benefits. Practices on reconstructing old industrial buildings for exhibition buildings have been implemented throughout China, but the specific theoretical research haven't appeared yet. Advance in practices while backward in theories will cause some problems, for instance, practical methods will be insystemised for lack of the necessary theoretical summary and guidance, the theoretical system will be incomplete for lack of important subject research projects. This article is set out from both practical and theoretical reality needs, strive through studying on subjects can guide practices of reconstructing old industrial buildings for exhibition buildings, for example, its development, drivers, influence factors, reconstructed objects and reconstructing directions, adaptive design essentials, operating methods and so on, to find out targeted, systematic and feasible solutions on practical issues of reconstructing old industrial buildings for exhibition buildings, and to provide basic data and beneficial reference for future related researches and practices.
