Water is an important component of natural resource, it is the base ofallthe living things'structure and activity; water is determinant to the living things and human beings in the natural environment.while the water resource per person in China is low, uneven distributed in both space and time. So to improve the efficiency and output of water and to establish a water-conserving society is the path of China's future.Water has the nature of space, dynamics, nature, society, environment and economy. Geography information system has the strong function of management and treatment of multi-nmature object. So it is essential to evaluate, plan and manage wa-ter resource by the appplication of geography information system Its functions, such as mass data management funciton, strict geography concept, distributing dynamics updating, data processing provide a broad platform for corresponding study and pro-duction.This paper analyzes the development status of geography information system, and its application in resource environment. On the base of analysis of GeoMedia system funciton, the paper put forward the detailed ways of GeoMedia's application and corresponding technology characteristics. Water evaluation platform in Naiman Banner, Tongliao, Inner Mongolia is set up through GeoMedia system's combination function, space analysi tools and data digging skills.Intergraph GeoMedia has the form of SIMS, SIMS is a kind of data-free transfer technology.GeoMedia can manage space and non-space data. GeoMedia has the inner space data engine which connects MS Access,SQL Server,Oracle,DB2,,Odbc,Arc/info,Arcview,CAD,Framme,Mapinfo,and MGE. GeoMedia has a lot of abilities, its data base service can analyze multi-space data form and it is the only one suitable to what-if analysis.The paper takes Naiman Banner, tongliao city, Inner Mongolia as the example. After collecting the data of geography, rivers, water survey, the district index is strictly set up according to geography concept and standard coordinates.By using GeoMedia system, calculating district and indexes are established. According to water evaluation Guide, the surface water, underground water and total water in Naiman Banner are evaluated.The total water output in Naiman Banner is 678000 thousandm3/a, among which:underground water 597000 thousandm3/a, surface water 117000 thou-sandm3/a, the duplicated water amount is 36000 thousandm3/a.The major rivers'water is not up to the requirement of water evaluation.Deeper underground water is up to the requirement of daily necessities, while the surface un-dergound water is not up to the requirement.The principle of using the water in Naiman Banner should be underground wa-ter first, surface water moderately, renewabale water fully is pointed out.Above all, the paper makes full use of geography information technology, fully presented the thought and ways of setting up GeoMedia system platforem in water evaluation and the characteristics of GeoMedia in water evaluatio. The application is wide and has the characteristics of long efficiency and inherity.
