Nowadays, the vehicles' steering system of all over world automobile manufacturers has changed progressively, turning from simple pure mechanical system and mechanical hydraulic power system to Electric Hydraulic Power Steering System (HPS) and Electric Power Steering System (EPS). For Xiali cars produced by Tianjin FAW, the steering system applies traditional mechanical steering system all along. When traveling at low speed, the driver feels hard to turn around. Being equipped with 0.993 liter engine, Xiali cars' driving power will be affected greatly when applying HPS system. And the layout of the car is difficult because of the small engine room.Comparing to traditional mechanical hydraulic power system, HPS system can improve markedly the performance of vehicles' handling and rationality of power steering properties, offer driver comfortable traveling condition. And the steering system applying electric power techniques, the engine doesn't have to output extra power. So the fuel consumption is reduced a lot. The assembly of the car is convenient because of the compact structure and variety of steering power method. At the advantage of above points, the EPS is the first choice of upgrade for Tianjin FAW.Based on the test of some Xiali passenger cars equipped with EPS system, this article mainly studies the mechanical structure, control arithmetic, fault diagnosis and experiment method. The first charter, we review the history and development of vehicles'steering system, and mainly compare the running principle and advantages and disadvantages of HPS and EPS system, expound the great potential of wide application of EPS in passenger cars. The second charter we discuss the mechanical and electric structure of EPS, then introduces self-aligning control strategy and damping strategy. In the third charter we studied how we correctly choice an electromotor, sensor and deceleration outfit that adapt to EPS equipped for Xiali passenger cars. In the fourth charter some typical fault diagnosis methods are introduced. In the end, we discuss the test method and standard of EPS in Xiali passenger cars at length.
