Porcelain post insulator which plays a role in supporting wire and insulation is a key component of substation operation. As the insulator is an electric porcelain products by high-temperature sintering, if the formula is out the way in the production process and the raw material do not mix unevenly, those can form internal shortcoming so that toughness will drop. Because insulator support the mechanical load in long-term, and wind, rain and snow will impact it, so that the additional stress will increase, if insulator has a small defective, it will cause a damage. At present, both inside and outside are based on ultrasonic testing, but it is inseparable from the ultrasonic flaw detector and the probe, therefore, ultrasonic testing device is relatively expensive, while the fault detection using vibration of sound waves is cheaper and easier than ultrasonic flaw detection. This paper offer a new idea, rap generate the sound waves to find the fault. By analyze the acoustic wave equation, using the finite element software ANSYS build model, emulate and calculate to the good and bad insulator. The calculation shows the feasibility of the fault detection of vibration sound.
