The Application Of The Compacted City Theory Used In Architectural Design

From the city layouts and functioning point of view, dense city theory and decentralized city theory represent two fundamental arguments in modern urban planning study. However, deficiencies embedded in the two forms, regarding the current trend emphasizing environmental protection and sustainable development, gradually stand out and become more and more conspicuous than ever before. Consequently we need to mingle the two forms with compromise of their respective concepts and ideas, and the compromise itself results in the theory of compact city. Compact-city, to a large extent, not only ensures environmental protection and sustainable development, but also provides us a practical and viable model concerning improving diversity and feasibility of city functions. The change in the form of a city finally will find its shadow on the city's buildings and constructions. In a compact city, the transportation, corresponding to the city's compact form, will bring changes in social contacts and contact spaces; the change in contact spaces, in turn, will greatly influence the morphology of architectures. Hence, a new architecture morphology came onto the stage along with the compact city theory. The purpose of this study focuses on how to precisely manage those influential factors and then apply them and generate corresponding theories, methods and patterns in architecture designing. From Rem Koolhaas's explanation to urbanism with application of culture of congestion, to MVRDV's visualization to future architectures under concept of Data-sacpe, as well as works from many architects, we could easily draw a conclusion for the changes brought by compact city theory. Last year, in the line 8 Gulou station project, based on the Beijing's high density currently and compact trends in future, we developed a compact design for the representative and important station in the ancient city. Meanwhile, the station, with its function as rail transportation node, just establishes its core position in the focus of compact city development. And the whole article was derived from the entire process of the compact city theory and its application into practice.
