As the high-speed of the current urban construction and industrial development, various types of power cables are used in more and more field. However, due to natural and man-made causes, the wire and cable will arise all sorts of faults. Once the fault occurred, if unable to rule out in time, it will cause significant economic losses and irreparable political influence. Therefore, how to locate the fault point quickly and accurately is particularly important. The current market has already emerged the length of the cable detection equipment, but because of its high prices, it is hardly to promote. The purpose of this task is to design a high-precision, low-power, low-cost portable cable length measuring device which based on a high-performance SCM C8051F as the controller, using the latest high-speed chip integration.This paper introduce the current development of the cable detection first, then after analysis the current methods of the cable length measurement, put forward the overall development plan for the cable fault detection device. The paper provides the hardware module circuit of all the major functions of the device. The software design, include control procedure of the measurement process, temperature measurement procedure and keyboard display procedure. Also add the procedure for data processing and compensation. By using software methods, we can improve system performance effectively, as well as reducing the cost of hardware at the same time. At last we get six different types and length of cable test results by a preliminary test on the device.From the result of the test, it can be conclude that the cable length measuring device works properly, and it has high accuracy, linearity and stability for current six types of cable. The device which has the feature of low-cost and high-performance will further promote the development of the current cable length measuring and related areas.
