Culture can be recorded in landscape, and be expressed by landscape. In the background of globalization, the history and culture are becoming the core competitiveness of the nation and region. Traditional public gardens, the special character of Chinese classical gardens, have evolved as the essential open space in the city for its beautiful scenery and profound culture. The thesis focuses on the culture of the traditional public garden, and its performance. Furthermore, it tries to find out the special planning and design methods to inherit and develop the culture of those gardens, in order to serve the modern urban life.The culture of the traditional public garden is showed in 3 respects: design of classical gardens, urban folklore and historical remains, which express 3 types of culture: the culture of the traditional intellectual, the culture of the citizens, and the culture of the environment. At present, the rapid pace of the modern life have more requirements of those gardens.On the basis of the research of the relative cases, the thesis concludes the planning and design methods to promote the cultures of the traditional public gardens. First, we should inherit and apply the logic of the design of classical gardens. Second, we should upgrade the facilities, the space systems, and the openness in order to form a public space with both traditional and modern features. Third, we should classify and evaluate the historical remains, and make them serve the new environment through restoration and renovation.With the special reference to Daming Lake, the thesis tries to explain the definite application of those methods, and shows that we could create an urban public space with the traditional culture and fulfillment of the modern requirement. |
