As a economic ,,easy and fast retaining technology, soil nailing has been widely used all over the world. However, the calculating and design method of soil nailing is still remained to be developed. Relatively, finite element method is an ideal tool for the calculation of soil nailing retaining structures. Though the method has been widely used, there exist some problems in the mechanical models of soil nail. The main intention of this paper is to develop a reasonable, simple, applicable computational model and corresponding finite element approach about soil nail,.At first, the author analyzed the models of soil nail used at present. Then delevoped a new type of element soil nail. Substantively, this 6-node element consists of two 4-node isoparametric elements which simulate nail and grout respectively. The stiffness matrix of the soil nail element can be analyticallyexpressed and can by incorporated into total stiffness matrix in programming.the relevant finite element method program was written with C++ laguange. Two examples concerning pullout test and an excavation pit retained with soil nailing were calculated and analyzed. The results have verified the validity of the method and its ability to solve the problems in engineering.
