SMA asphalt mixture has a fine road performance of high temperature stability, crack-resistance and water stability and skid-resistance, so it has been applied to the high-grade asphalt pavement in China since the late 1990s. As a major highway construction province, it is of great theoretical and practical significance for Zhejiang province to carry out SMA research with local material.Firstly, the traffic condition and climate of Zhejiang province was introduced in this paper, and the common failings and initial damages of the normal asphalt pavement were also analyzed. SMA asphalt pavement was compared with the normal asphalt pavement in the indexes of friction coefficient, smoothness, and deflection and rut-resistance, it is indicated that SMA pavement is of obvious advantage and the high level asphalt pavement will avoid the common failings and initial damages effectively by using SMA.Secondly, experiments were made on the Zhejiang section of the Zha-Jia-Su Highway. The local course aggregate, fine aggregate and filler were selected for the mixture ratio design of SMA, and then the mixture gradation and the optimal asphalt-aggregate ratio were confirmed. The construction process, machine and key techniques were researched roundly to guide the pavement construction. The indexes of friction coefficient, smoothness, and deflection were inspected in SMA pavement and the normal asphalt pavement, and these indexes were inspected again after one year. It is indicated that the index decline of SMA pavement is slower than that of normal asphalt pavements, so the SMA pavement has an excellent road performance. In addition, the economy analysis was employed, and it shows that the prophase investment of SMA pavement is more, but the anaphase maintain fee is more less, so it has a better long-term economy benefitFinally, the economic analysis of SMA indicates that SMA pavement enjoys good economic performance in the long term as, though the initial investment is for SMA pavement is high but its latter maintenance cost is far lower.
