Under the threat of energy and environmental crisis, energy-saving architecture has been a popular trend in the development of the world as well as an important measure to improve the hot environment and save the energy. In Hunan Province, the side-opened space of public architecture consume a large amount of energy. Besides, the particular climate of Hunan makes the summer extremely hot and winter extremely cold. As a result, how to make an energy-saving design and optimize the energy-efficient parameter is of vital significance in bettering the hot environment of public architecture, providing valuable suggestion for local energy-saving building and promoting the sustainable development among man, architecture and eco-environment.Based on the backdrop of the present time and the current situation of Hunan Province, the thesis at the outset looks back at the historical development of side-opened space, its origins and its features. After that, the thesis continues to categorize the side-opened space and give a brief introduction to their strengths and weaknesses respectively in saving energy. Then, the thesis concludes the energy saving strategy in Hunan Province from the aspects of plane and sectional drawings, the selection and design of envelop frame, the choice of sunshade techniques, the realization of ventilation technology, the usage of solar energy and the design of eco-green. These strategies will help the architect make an energy-efficient design of side-opened space from a macroscopical viewpoint. The correctness of the macro strategies provides guiding principles and is a key part to assure the total effect. Finally, the thesis establishes an energy-consuming model with the assistance of PBECA energy-consuming simulation software. After calculating the quantity of energy consumed by side-opened space in Hunan Province, the thesis explores the relationship between the amount of energy consumed by side-opened space and the pattern, shape, height, area, lighting and direction of the side-opened space. Consequently, a series of energy-saving schemes which best suits the public buildings of Hunan Province comes into being.
