The backgrounds of this study can be divided into two categories.First, both Beijing and Seoul are two world-level metropolitan cities with a population of more than 10 million residents. It is true that both cities have similar problems on transportation as of now and thus have the urgent priorities to solve those problems on transportation from the reality with more complicated traffic systems day by day.Second, it is greatly necessary for both cities to have the global research and cooperation in times with respect to the coexistence through the technological alliance, cooperation and interchange including the traffic systems, traffic infrastructures, intelligent transportation, future transportation, etc. This study aims at comparing and analyzing the traffic systems, traffic infrastructures, intelligent transportation and future transportation among others in both Beijing and Seoul, while preparing for the proper plans and solutions on the traffic problems for both cities. In addition, it attempts to review problems on the traffic systems of both cities and to seek for solutions.Considering more specifically, firs, the study suggests solutions for the traffic problems, while increasing our knowledge on the traffic problems occurring in both Beijing and Seoul, as it reviews the functions and roles of transportation in a metropolitan city as a whole.Second, it is expected to need a great deal of traffic demands in a stage still in parallel with redevelopments and reconstructions on the urban development stages with respect to the current status of transportation in both Beijing and Seoul. In addition, it is true that the traffic demands are sharply increasing for the continuous increase of population with human activities from the concentration of population functions on the capital regions, the explosive increase of cars from the enhanced income of citizens, etc. Accordingly, it is necessary to review the current status of transportation as both Beijing and Seoul arrive at the same marginal situations on the serious traffic difficulties for either Beijing or Seoul.Third, problems on the public transportation are similar as a whole in both Beijing and Seoul. Beijing has the sharply increased number of vehicles with severe traffic jams at the center of city for the inflow of cars from outsides. Seoul has the aggravating problems with the crowded cars around the commuting time zone along with the lacking abilities in the public transportation and difficulties in the passenger transportation from the concentration of population on the capital regions around Seoul.Although it is true that passengers using the public transportation are recently increasing due to the increased speed of buses from the improved bus systems as well as the extension of subway lines, such a trend is not thought to reach any sufficient level yet.In addition, many citizens eventually turn to the use of their privately owned vehicles while aggravating the traffic difficulties as either Beijing or Seoul still have difficulties for citizens, who use the traffic infrastructures, because of the lacking abilities of transportation and crowded traffic systems comparing to those of countries with the advanced traffic infrastructures. This study suggests improvements on such problems in the traffic systems and transportation as a whole.
