With great competition of global automobile business, the automobile industry of our country faces serious challenge. Now the most compelling mission is: The advanced mold technology which deciding the machining accuracy of automobile covering panel is grasped by foreign countries. It is important how to assimilate and absorb, develop core technology of company and build development platform which has proprietary intellectual property rights and more market competition. It is significant that realizes independent innovation and development, quickly get out of the situation that our auto industry is under the control of foreign company and is short of innovation capability.Reverse engineering is a advanced design method that can do digitalization for the product, CAD model reconstruction, model machining and optimizing evaluation. It needs data measurement, data process and model reconstruction, etc. The paper uses high accuracy three dimensional measuring machine to measure the part, uses RE software Geomagic Studio9 and Qualify9 to do the data preprocess work of the covering panel which includes cloud data alignment, cloud data simplification and cloud data de-noising. Through capsulating to produce the surface, the CAD model is get and part surface reconstruction is finished.Because rectangle box has all characteristic of typical drawing procedure, it is chosen as testing object to develop the punching simulation system. The developing procedure is: firstly in the I-DEAS software modeling for the testing part and mold according to actual processing condition, then developing punching simulation system for the covering panel, doing the punching simulation computing for the rectangle box, adjusting processing parameters and modifying computing programs according to compared result, repeating computing verification until the two are in agreement with each other; at last comparing the computing result with the part which is received by experiment, to verify its veracity. The experiment result shows that using the developed program to simulate the drawing forming of the covering panel optimizes the drawing processing scheme, well removes the crack and wrinkle.In sum, the paper provides some conclusions to instruct the machining of the part. It also has certain parallel and referencing value for the process control of similar parts in actual machining.
