After the founding of the People's Republic of China, China has built more than 90,000 reservoirs, and more than 90 percent of them adopt earth-rock dam as a breakwater structure. These projects played an important role in the national economy and brought significant benefits. However, since the majority of the reservoir project were built in the sixties and seventies of last century, which subject to technical and economic conditions. The design, construction and other procedures are not reasonable. And with the long time running, most of reservoirs emerged aging diseases. It leads to the decline of building safety, practicality and durability, and the reservoirs can not play the normal function. Take Shandong province for example, during the 5084 reservoirs, more than 2400 reservoirs are dangerous, accounting for more than 45% of the total number. The existence of damage in reservoirs influences the normal run of reservoirs and threatens the safety of people's lives and properties. So studying on the reservoirs engineering aging has a great significance. The most two important aspects of reservoirs aging problem are aging disease of reservoir breakwater structure and sediment accumulation. In Shandong province, 32 large reservoir breakwater structures are earth-rock dam. The article starts with the cause of the earth-rock dam damage, disease examination and reservoirs silt. Based on systematical summary and analysis, it uses the multi-level and multi-objective evaluation of the fuzzy theory and proposed the index system of aging degree of large reservoirs in Shandong province. Taking Rizhao reservoir as an example, the main research contents are as follows,●Synthetically analyzed the development and operation of Chinese reservoir status, combined with domestic and Shandong Province's operation status of the reservoir, proposed the necessity of the research of the reservoir's aging.●The formation cause, evolution mechanism, type and feature of earth-rock dam aging damage are thoroughly investigated.●Detection methods for crack, leakage, coast and so on are proposed.●An evaluation system of aging damage is constructed, which uses a new approach named as multi-factor analysis to effectively carry out quantitative evaluation and classification of earth-rock dam damage.●Based on the comparison of the results of the analysis and engineering, verify the reliability and rationality of the evolution index.●Measures of preventing and repairing aging damage are presented. On the basis of the analysis results of the evaluation system, the foundational data are provided, which are used to judge the degree of aging damage and furthermore to determine the reasonable measures used for preventing aging damage and maintaining, reinforcing or reconstructing dam. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper are verified in the practical engineering application.
