While economy of our country develops at top speed, the safety situation of drinking water concerning the interests of people may be worried about. Drinking water is the most important uses of water resources. At the present time, there are many problems on water quality, amount of water and water resource management. So drinking water of resident faces great threat. Moreover, about 327 million people live in extensive rural area. The safety of drinking water in the area becomes one of the most concerned issues for all previous government. Therefore, it is of great significance to theoretically study on safety of drinking water in rural area.In recent years, wide application of geographic information system (GIS) based on computer have brought vitality to solving the safety issue of drinking water in rural areas. It makes up a lot of shortcoming of traditional methods using manual calculation. This paper attempts to make use of GIS technology to analyze some problems on safety of drinking water in rural areas. And it provides a certain amount of technical support for solving the issue.With the support of Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources and the Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, taking Shunyi District in Beijing as study area, the paper conducts comprehensive analysis, classification and coding on water source and water supply sites in 5 townships(Bei xiao ying town, Long Wan town, Nan Cai town, Bei Wu town and Da sun ge zhuang town) and 5 offices(Niu lan shan office, Ma Po office, Yang Zhen office, Nan fax in office and Ren He office) combined 215 villages. The above study areas are provided by Shun Yi District Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. According to GIS information system theory and software engineering method, computer technology, database management and dyadic module GIS technology are used to develop drinking water quality monitoring system for Shun Yi District. Monitoring and analyzing drinking water by computer has come true. And it also improves the modernization level of quality monitoring for drinking water.Consider the actual situation, the drinking water quality monitoring system is based on SQL Server2000 which is used to manage attribute data and ArcSDE which is used as spatial data engine. Object-oriented programming language Visual Basic 6.0 and MapObjects component are combined to program to realize real-time management, inquiry, Statistics, analysis, demonstration and output functions of drinking water quality data in Shun Yi District. The system has quick response in speed, simplicity for operating, friendly user interface, complete data-processing functions, strong practicality, advanced nature and and portability.
