The differential settlement between the bridge abutment and the approach embankment has been a persistent problem. Relatively small differential movements produce the common"bump at the end of the bridge", which is unpleasant and often hazardous to the motoring public. Through theoretical calculation, laboratory tests and field survey, the author studied the settlement of the approach embankment and adopted some measures to decrease it.A secant modulus method was used to calculate the compression of the soil. The compression curve of the soil stabilized with lime with different compactness, lime content and age were got. The effects on secant modulus of compactness, lime content and age were analyzed. The structure design and construction technologies of the subgrade and pavement of the approach section were studied. The measures to decrease the bump at the end of the bridge were concluded, which included the use of light filling, reinforcement, soil stabilized with lime and transition pavement et al.The settlement of all of the approach embankments in Ji-He expressway were surveyed and the reasons to the settlement were analyzed. The settlement at the ground, the top of the pavement and the abutment were measured for long time. The distributions of the settlement of the approach embankment in both transverse and longitudinal directions were got. Results also showed that the use of soil stabilized with lime could decrease the settlement of the approach embankment. The soil stabilized with lime is often used in the approach embankment. Static triaxial tests to it were conducted. Its curve between stress and strain waw got and its constitutive equations were set up with damage mechanics method. The dynamic elastic modulus, dynamic damping ratio and permanent deformation of the soil stabilized with lime were also studied throuth dynamic triaxial tests, which provided basis for the use of soil stabilized with lime in approach embankment.
