With the speeding up of Urbanization process, the number of large-scale public buildings grows fast. The energy saving of large-scale public buildings became the focus in this field because of the huge energy consumption of large-scale public buildings. As large emporium building asks for longer cooling period and more comfort, the energy consumption per area of large emporium building is the highest in large-scale public buildings. Thus, further research about energy saving of large emporium building is necessary. However, there was no specific data on terminal energy consumption of large emporium buildings in Chongqing, and the energy consuming characteristics of them still needs more description. In this condition, the study and application of energy saving technology of large emporium buildings' reconstruction and construction is very limited. Therefore, energy consumption statistics and energy-saving research of large emporium buildings in Chongqing is very necessary.Based on data obtained through the research of sixteen large emporium buildings in downtown of Chongqing, the basic structural characteristics, energy consumption characteristics, energy consumption per unit area and terminal energy consumption were analyzed. DEST was used as a tool to develop a energy consumption evaluation model with a representative large emporium building as a sample for calculation. Results from Simulation ware used to analyse the reasonability of a building's energy use. Measures for the improvement of energy saving were suggested and effects of these measures were predicted.The results showed that the total yearly energy consumption density of selected samples was in the range of 210.41~407.99KWh/ m~2.a. Main problems existing in current emporium buildings were poor energy efficiency of round structure, serious waste of lighting energy, bad air-condition designing and poor technology of running and management. Therefore, there is huge potential of energy saving in emporium buildings. The simulation results of energy consumption of representative emporium buildings by DEST discovered that the cooling load take a lead role in total energy consumption of large emporium buildings in Chongqing. The building orientation has the great impact of building energy consumption. The relations of heating consumption and building orientation is: To the South to the East> to the South> to the North.By camparing the simulated results with reseach results, the loading characteristics of simulation agreed with the one of research, indicating the reliability of the simulation with DEST. By applying different energy-saving reconstruction plans of exterior-protected construction to the repesentative emporium building, it was showed that the characteristics of energy-saving rate of different plans was: added sunshading on windows > laminate on windows > glass transformation > thermal insulation of roof> thermal insulation of wall.This study applied the transform wind rate system, different fresh flue control ways and added heat reclaim installing of discharge air system to the energy saving of the repesentative emporium model. It was found that transform wind rate system,lowered the air-condition loading by 25.9%; Changed the way of fresh flue control, lowered the air-condition loading by 10.9% and 24.7%. And the increase of heat reclaim installing of discharge air system,the ways of sensible heat reclamation and whole heat reclamation lowered the air-condition loading by 35.5% and 23.9% respectively.
