Comparatively, traditional Chinese landscape theory seldom regarded the influence of western development, the productions of which focused mainly on academic discussion with dated contents. This thesis intends to analyze absolutely on the influence of traditional Chinese landscape theory on western study, including the history, some specific aspects on landscape thoughts and vegetation arrangement, and the influence on the whole, to reach a more objective judgment on traditional Chinese landscape.Living creature plays a saint role in the world essentially, while the vegetation, as an element of the landscape, the role of which and the characteristics of Chinese and western theories, are of great value to learn. The vegetation should be the most significant element in future landscape design. The thesis focuses on the traits of Chinese and western gardening with vegetation and part of art and culture history, employing the principles on general comparative study, which mainly applying the historical and parallel comparison methods. Due to different background of Chinese and western landscape, such as geographic environment, aesthetic thoughts and cultural aspects, the gardening thoughts differed consequently. Landscape culture was substantial to traditional Chinese culture, with great influence on economy, culture and consciousness of people.As traditional landscape culture could no longer meet various requirements of modern society, the development of Chinese landscape is facing new historical opportunity and challenge. Chinese landscape arts need to carry forward ancient conventions, explore and exploit even more landscape styles.When we absorb traditional Chinese essences, we could refer to excellent foreign landscape conventions, subjective and objective instance accordingly, mainstream and branches, necessity and coincidence as a whole.
