This paper bases on the Portable Multifunction Instrument project, on the basis of portable, each module of the system is programmable, then the system can be used as a general and extensible data acquisition system. The system was adopts high-performance ARM processor and embedded Linux operating system to perform DSP, which meets the requirements of portable and general. The system also uses LCD, which establishs friendly graphics user interface. This paper describes the whole hardware structure and the design of the system software, and includes a series of research work about the application of embedded Linux operating system to Palm Lab.Firstly, it is introduced that the significance of the research, the development and the performance of embedded system, the current status of multi-channel high-speed data acquisition system, and the main research work of this paper.Secondly, it is introduced the system's structure of hardware and then expounded the components of each hardware board for the general data acquisition system, and circuit design of hardware interface for each module.Thirdly, the common embedded operating system in the first place is analyzed, and the embedded Linux system based on the traits of this hardware system. It also includes how to transplant Linux kernel and file system.Fourthly, concept and model of device driver is explained, combined with the system's hardware platform, a Linux char device driver is programmed. The structure of the device driver, the communication mode of the application procedures and the mode of data transmission are described. Then the direction of the Linux-based graphical interface tool MiniGUI is presented. Finally, it is introduced what is the LabLWL and how it is designed.
