Short pier sheer wall is a new type component to resistant lateral load acted on buildings, which springing up in China in the recent years. Some excellences of irregular cross-section column frame such as no extrusive columns appeared in the wall or at the corner of the room are reserved. On the other hand, some shortages of them such as the bad performances of seismic resistance are overcome by employing the shear wall with short piers instead of the irregular cross-section column frame in the building constructions.And Compared with ordinary shear wall,short pier sheer wall is more lighter, more higher opening rate and more better ductility. For those reasons the short pier shear walls are widely used in the middle or high-rise buildings. However, there are no complete theories available to guide the design of this type of shear walls due to the lack of research on it. Published research papers mainly came from domestic, there is no paper can be found composed by oversea researchers. So many structure designer avoid to use this new type component, and this is an obstacle for short pier sheer wall to be more widely used.Based on previous researches,this dissertation is going to do some further research on the aseismic performance of short pier sheer wall. The mechanical behaviors, failure patterns, and dynamic performances of short pier shear walls with vertical load are studied by theoretic analysis of the limit value of axial compression ratio of the pier in short pier sheer wall and experimental research. The main contents are as follows.1. Educed the formula of axial compression ratio and the limit value of it, including rectangular section and'T'section pier.2. The experiment for one 1/4 scaled 4-story models of short pier sheer wall under the concentrate cyclic lateral load and vertical load at the top of the wall was implemented. According to the experiment result the failure patterns and hysteretic property were analysed.3. Gained a conclusion that the short pier sheer wall is a kind of excellent component to resistant lateral load acted on buildings.
