The motion of barge in waves is generated by the wave exciting force, even more the floating body could be overturning or slamming, it will directly make impact to the stability of a barge and the safety of equipment and crew on board the ship. Therefore, the study of barge moving in the waves is very important for fluid dynamic performance of barge. There are two methods to study the motions of barge in waves: The first one is based on wave theory and numerical simulation to predict the motion response; the second one is to carried out model test method for obtaining the appropriate results.In this paper we first review the development of ship seakeeping and outline the basic theory of seakeeping. For the motions simulation of barge in wave, a rigid-body dynamics theory and the 2nd Newton law are employed to establish floating body motion equations in six degrees of freedom. In this paper the modified strip method is applied to compute the added mass, damping coefficient and restoring force of barge in regular wave. The above-mentioned work could easily promote the research on the motion computation of barge in waves. The barge heave and pitch motions are employed as numerical examples. The wave exciting force and motion response are derived by strip theory. A simple and quick compute method is presented. The frequency-domain and time-domain computation methods are performed for the barge computation, individually. Some related computation results are presented.In actual sea condition, the floating body moves in the rules wave rarely. To better predict the motions of floating body moving in waves. In this paper, we outline the theory of floating body motion in the irregular waves. Meanwhile, the numerical feature of the spectral density that describes the floating body motion in the irregular waves is derived. On the basis of theory for floating body in irregular waves, the numerical results of heave, pitch and roll are presented. Finally, computation of floating body motion in irregular waves is taken to be a numerical example and the computed results are presented.
