With the fast developing of computer technology ,relay protection tester is becoming more and more complex .There are more requirements on the technology of measure and test , and also more requirements on relay tester .In the new type of relay tester ,automatic testing,expert systems,online support,output collecting and other functions air include .All of the functions and requirements make that it's difficult to build a software by only one or two programmer ,we need a group of programmer .But the communication of programmers,the define of module,the define of interface and other complex work make the software design very difficult .To solve the problem ,we must use the software engineering method.Software engineering is a engineering in software design .To make the software excellent , Software engineering use systematic,strict constraint and quantifiable method in the software design. The constituent part of software engineering is procedure,method and tools . Software engineering approach is the method of how to build a software on technology.In this paper, the author is going to find a realizable approach of relay tester software design. To find a realizable approach, we must think about manpower resources and dead line. In this paper, the history of relay tester and software engineering is introduced firstly. Secondly, realizable requirement analysis is given after studying about user demand,present situation of relay tester and developing trend. Thirdly, preliminary design and detailed design are given . In the preliminary design, program architecture and main data construction is studied. In the detailed design, detail programming method is given. Finally, the disadvantages of existent schemes and proposals to improve the criteria are pointed out.
