With the continuous development and the increasing demand for the electric power, the requirement for the Substation Automation System is being increased. With the development of micro-electronics, computer and communication, the Substation Automation has developed rapidly, this set higher requirements to communication network of Substation Automation System. Currently, the communication network of substation automation adopt RS-485 serial, fieldbus or Ethernet, they are lineate, the wiring should be restricted. The disposal and change of the wire will not be easy, the upgrade and expand of the network will be inconvenient , installation and maintenance is very complex. With the development of wireless communications technology and wireless devices, wireless networks can be used to expand the existing communication network of substation automation.In this article, the development of substation automation system and the communication structure of substation have been introduced. Wireless network has a great deal of application prospects in power system, the application of wireless ad hoc network in substation automation system has been researched.Ad hoc network is a multi-hop wireless network formed without any central administration or fixed infrastructure. It is robust, flexible and easy to deploy. A wireless network scheme based on ad hoc technology is presented for substations. Its feasibility is discussed, and its network structure and router protocol are described.Last, this paper discusses how to use NDIS Intermediate Driver to realize the software platform of wireless ad hoc network,which is based on power system. The program's frame based on Passthru,the routing protocol——OLSR and the principle of the program module are developed,and a experimental platform of wireless ad hoc network have been developed. The characteristic and the application prospects of the platform are introduced finally.
