The article's goal is to establish the ship maneuvering mathematical model, simulate the ship's movement in restricted water, to research the width and depth of fairway, speed, lateral distance from the central line and other factors on the bank effect of the ship, and discuss the ship's course keeping ability in restricted waters.According to Japan MMG's ship maneuvering mathematical model theory, the formulas for calculating hull hydrodynamic force, rudder force and propeller force are presented, and the hydrodynamic interaction among them is considered. The article provides a ship maneuvering mathematical model in restricted water which combined the Kijima model and Yoshimura model. The ship maneuvering mathematical model in restricted water is suitable for the entire maneuvering range including normal speed, low speed, small and large drift angle, and so on. For the effect of shallow water, the research conclusions made by Kijima is adopted. On the base of above-mentioned mathematical model, the paper fully considers the impact of bank suction and push torque when ship sails close to the coast, applies the fourth-order Runge-Kutta to compute the mathematical model, and simulates the ship's movement in restricted waters with Simulink toolbox in MATLAB. At last, the paper studies the impact of factors on ship's bank effect, such as the fairway width and depth, speed, the lateral distance from the centerline (the distance between the ship offshore). This paper also studies the course keeping of a ship in restricted waters. The research provides the pilots and officers with the reference on safe control of the vessel in restricted waters, such as narrow channel and canal, and brings forward a theoretical base to the study and development of ship handling simulator.
