The Environmental Aesthetic Interpretation Of The Principle Of Modeling Heaven And Earth In Chinese City Design

City, which has emerged for thousand years, is more and more important for human being as a place for living. Urban aesthetics is a new course, which makes study of cities. Ancient Chinese has a lot of original views in Urban aesthetics, especially in city design. The principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth is a representative one in city design in ancient Chinese. The principle guides the urban construction more than two thousand years and it is improving and perfect. This paper discusses the principle and shows its utilization in ancient city design and the value and the aesthetic intension all the cities show.The paper is divided into four parts: the first one is Urban aesthetics and its status quo; the second one is city design in ancient Chinese and the principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth; the third one is the aesthetic intension of the principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth in ancient Chinese city design; the fourth one is Modeling Heaven and Earth and aesthetic feature in ancient Chinese cities.In the first part, it introduces that ecological problem is becoming a global problem. Ecological aesthetics and Environmental aesthetics emerge. On the base of it, Urban aesthetics also emerges. City image and its aesthetic intension is the object of Urban aesthetics. Scholars pay more attention to Urban aesthetics, how to make the city beautiful and how to appreciate the city. At last it introduces the status quo of Chinese Urban aesthetics.In the second part, it discusses the origin of city. The city design is developed with the city. It analyses the principle of city design in ancient Chinese. And then, it points out that the principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth emerges in Chunqiu dynasty. Wu zixu builded Helv by the direction of the principle. The city image, which be set up by the principal, embodies the symbol way of thinking of Chinese culture, and the image have distinctive aesthetic intension.In the third part, it explores the principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth as the guideline of city design, which embodies the thought of ancient Chinese philosophy. The thoughts of "Li", "Yin Yang Wu Xing" and "Human Being and Heaven Be in One" have deep influence to the principle. And then, it analyses the utilization of the principle in city design. There are three ways to design a city, "Round Heaven and Square Earht", "Modeling Heaven" and "Modeling Earth".In the fourth part, it shows some examples just like dynasty, Chang'an in Han dynasty, Chang'an in Sui and Tang dynasty, Dadu in Yuan dynasty, Bejing in Ming and Qing dynasty. The principle of Modeling Heaven and Earth is the main way to build the city. All the cities embody the intension of traditional culture. They show the characteristic of Chinese tradition. This kind of characteristic makes them charming.In conclusion from exploring, we not only know the beauty of ancient Chinese city deeply but also understand the essence of Chinese culture. It is useful for us to realize the problems in city design contemporary.On the basis of achievements of former generations, some new thinking and supplement have been introduced in this paper. Maybe it has some shortcomings; I hope they can be pointed out.
