Some overproof flaws are often found in the periodic inspection of boiler pressure vessel of power plants. These flaws can not be erased for all kinds of reasons. Because of insufficient current supply, the blind operation of boiler pressure vessel containing flaws is one security danger in the power plants. As a result, it's important to assess the safety of pressure vessel when we know the existence of flaws. So the expert system for assessing the safety of pressure vessel containing flaw is established to provide basis for the inspection and accept of flaws, avoid the unnecessary economic loss in reworking and reject.In this paper the conception, the application and development of expert system are described. Safety assessment expert system is established by using Visual Basic 6.0 program design language and employing the theory of Object-Oriented Program Design. This system can be used to accurately assess the safety of common flaws in several kinds of pressure vessels. So it can provide help for the safe management of power plants. Database of material property and sorted stress is embedded in the program, including the data of material property reflecting the true performance of pressure vessel coming from the experiments and the distribution of stress coming from finite element method in the pressure vessels. This expert system can provide convenience for the user and prepare to ameliorate and update in the future."Guide on methods for assessing the acceptability of flaws in metallic structures", BS7910, is one of the main laws in engineering to assess the acceptability among numerous assessing methods all over the world. The assessing standard and assessing methods are introduced in this paper. Based on this standard the database of inference rule of expert system is compiled.The appearance of this expert system is classical and friendly. The assessing process is easy and feasible.
