Study on the application of GIS to hydrodynamic simulation is of concern because it is important for the designing and management of many projects. Based on the hydrodynamic model developed by Tianjin University and MapGIS software system, study on coupling GIS and hydrodynamic model is carried in this thesis.Firstly, the data structure of the hydrodynamic model is analyzed. Then system analysis is carried considering the characteristics and functions of MapGIS, with particular attention being paid to data processing. Finally, the coupled hydrodynamic and GIS system is implemented by using VC and MapGIS functions. In addition, a Graphic User Interface is developed considering the users'custom.It is important for a GIS to be capable of analyzing the rainfall runoff, and this function is provided by some famous GIS software. However, this function is not found in any GIS software developed in China. By analyzing the rainfall runoff models used in the dominating GIS systems, the D8 slop runoff model is selected to calculate the rainfall runoff routes in this thesis, and the module is implemented in mapGIS.
