In the raiway and highway construction at the mountainous regions in our country, as an effective measure to reduce the investment cost and increase the project progress, the high-fill and deep-excavation roadbeds are the overwhelming majority in the total length of normal railway lines. Additionally, the lands are rolling highly in the moutainous area, inevitably, there is a need to build a certain high-fill and deep-excavation roadbeds. Therefore, the high-fill and deep-excavation roadbed becomes one of the main structures in the roadbed projects.One of the common faults is the deformation and damage of the high-fill embankment. The causes are very complexed. It relates not only to the density of the filled soil for the roadbed, but also to the nature of roadbed filling materials, side-slope gradient, foundation nature, hydrology condition, roadbed pressing machine, design standard and construction method. In the projects, the deformation and damage of the high-fill embankment is mainly presented as cracks on the filled-soil for the embankment, sliding of the roadbed, collapse of the side slope and the related roadbed structure damage, whole or partial settlement of the roadbed etc. Once the high-fill roadbed is deformed and damaged, it is very difficult to repair. Therefore, high attention must be paid to it. In order to avoid oversized settlement and deformation, further research on the settlement and deformation of high-fill embankment is much more meaningful.The research aim of this paper is to find out the features of the settlement and deformation of high-fill embankment. It is done through the site tests on embankment settlement and horizontal deformation and geotechnical centrifuge model tests, to disclose the embankment settlement and deformation rules and to analyze the settlement and deformation features presented during embankment structure (embankment height and side-slope gradient) changing and soil parameters (compactness and water-bearing ratio) changing, as well as the relationship between them .The innovation of this paper, is that we had seperated the compacted settlement and deformation settlement of the embankment, obtained the degree of settlements and, analyzed the change rule of the deformation settlement percentage covered in the total settlement when there are changes in the embankment structure and soil parameters, fixed the side-slope gradient range which is most sensitive to the embankment settlement and deformation. These research results will provide certain reference value to the research, design and construction of high fill embankment projects.
