Combustible cartridge case is a great improvement in the structure of weapons charging instead of metal cartridge. Combustible cartridge case not only has the general function of the metal cartridge, but also has its own special functions, such as providing energy, improving the ballistic performance, reducing the whole weight of shells, and convenient for service.It is a contradiction between combustion performance and mechanical performance. Adding nitrocellulose and reducing the quantity of paper pulp can improve the combustion performance of combustible cartridge case, but decrease the mechanical performance; reducing nitrocellulose and adding the quantity of paper pulp can improve the mechanical performance, but the combustion performance is badly. For example, there are smog even residua after shooting. In order to solve this contradiction, improving the formula of combustible cartridge has been studied in this paper. The thermodynamic properties and oxygen balance of combustible cartridge was calculated too.Several combustible cartridges case was produced with molding technique under the components design. The microcosmic structures of some combustible cartridges case with different components were characterized. Mechanical properties were also tested. The results showed that the resistance of pull and stress of the novel combustible cartridges case were increased 13% than conventional ones, and the surface area of the combustible cartridges was increased with the energetic fibers improving.The combustion performance of the combustible cartridges case with different formulation was studied by closed bomb test. The results showed that adding energetic fibers could improve the maximum of pressure, increase the burning rate and short the combustion time.The combustion performance of the combustible cartridges under different ignition and different charge density was studied too. The results showed that, energy release was more complete and the burning rate was more rapid under strong ignition; as the loading density increasing, the maximum of pressure was increased , combustion time was shorten and the burning rate was accelerated.
