Chinese traditional residence, commonly worshipped as a grand historical project, was evolved by all Chinese ethnics—one generation after another—until becoming what it is today. Having been through centuries of criticisms and compliments, eliminations and assimilations, traditional residence has grown into a living embodiment of long-established Chinese philosophy on inseparability among nature, society and human. Cherished as a precious historical heritage, traditional residence has not been fully understood; residence located in small watershed, for instance, is a barren field yet to be explored. The traditional residence in Weibei Plateau is just among those unexplored, albeit carrying profound implications in humanity, ethnic spirit, value orientation and aesthetics. Profoundly influenced by the so-called Guanzhong Culture, Weibei Plateau residence has displayed a unique architectural and decorative style, singling itself out of the varieties of traditional residence all over China. Based on such awareness, this thesis attempts to arouse a cultural understanding of Weibei traditional residence by introducing its natural environment, history and folklore culture. With on-the-spot surveys laid as the groundwork, this thesis presents an analysis and elaboration over the traditional culture of Weibei Plateau by a mix of physical perception and logical reasoning. Firstly, a brief introduction and analysis is given to the geographical, climatic, historical and cultural background of Weibei Plateau. Secondly, with the research objective directed to Tang's Courtyard of Tang's village in Xun Yi County, the settlement feature of Tang's village is illustrated, followed by an elaboration of the unit, distributional, structural, material and decorative characteristics of Tang's Courtyard. In the end is a discussion over the inspirations that Weibei traditional residence may spark upon modern regional architecture, alongside the importance of protection and development of traditional residence.
