The formation and development of machine manufacturing science have done a great contribution to the civilization and advancement of human being. In the past manufacturing industry has created heavier wealth, but now the resource consumption and environmental pollution caused by it bring into a severe threat to the sustainable development of the economy and society. So how to reduce the resource consumption and environmental pollution of mechanical processing in manufacturing industry has been one of the most important problems which the development of manufacturing science and technology has to be confronted with in new century.The paper constructed the theoretical system of green machining and developed the expert system of cutting fluid systematically based on the overview and analyses of the development of industry ecology,cleanness production and green manufacturing at home and abroad. The primary contributions of this paper are:1. It systematically constructed the theoretical system of green machining, defined the notion,connotation and character of green machining, illuminated the material,resource and information flows in green machining;2. It set up the appraisal system of green machining, presented the evaluating indicator, ascertained elemental assessment method, proposed the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy assessment. The application case showed that this appraisal system was systematic,integrated,simple,reliable and easy to use;3. The expert system of computer aided selection of cutting fluid (CASCF) based on ADO has developed, which stemed from the logical method of cutting fluid selection in machining. The reasonableness of system organization,the amity of interface and comprehensive applicability provided the convenience to bring green machining into effect for enterprise(group);4. The primary ways to carry green machining into practice were discussed and could guide manufacturing enterprise (group) to carry out green machining theoretically.This paper was one of challenges supported by Jiangsu Province "cyanine engineering" foundation. The theoretical system established in the research could enrich and develop the science and technology of machine manufacturing and the expert system of CASCF had significant utility value for manufacturing enterprise (group) to conduct green machining and carry out sustainable development strategy.
