| We are experiencing a period of space reformation. The space between city streets is being homogenized. A strong force is sweeping away the original city space and ground landscape and bringing in high buildings and large mansions instead. Office buildings and commercial houses are becoming increasingly the main part of human life. The alley is gone, the lane is gone and the street is too wide to walk through. The number on the doorplate is larger and larger, which implies a big mouth that swallows people's past life and past growing world. Up against a brand new world that we seem to be waiting for a long time, the word"lost"can not describe fully people's feelings. The word"missing"is what we'll use.In this storm that stifles our age, there are several keywords that we just cannot ignore: the rising of homogenized space, the disappearance of differentiated space and the loss of simulation, creation and confidence. A homogenized space does not care for human originality and creativity. Similar buildings and scenes everywhere are just products of a strong force of commercial logic. When you are absorbed into the elements of a traditional culture, you will slowly and dimly find a door that leads you to invisible Chinese formalities and vocabularies and to intangible Chinese secret charms and surprises. You see nothing outside the door, but when you get in, you will find there are full of latent and mysterious Chinese philosophies around you. These philosophies, they are there, straight and serious at first sight. But when you look into them, they seem not there, plausible and weird. That is an invisible China there. There is a way that you will be Chinese when you don't need to be Chinese designedly. Let's see what will happen if we try to discard all visible Chinese formalities and symbols: such as the imperial roof, the overhanging eave, the traditional bracket set, the sparrow brace, the timber truss, the window grille, the moon gate and so on. Generations of Chinese intelligent efforts did not bring forth a big breakthrough. Why? Because most smart persons could not leave those tangible Chinese symbols. And because the lines and forms that old ancestors have optimized for thousands of years are just too pure and abundant. If materialized and representational urban streetscape and space can be supported by thinking of environment, geography, history, culture and human spirit, it's possible for them to become more thought-provoking other than their representational beauty. The integration of urban streetscape with regional culture needs to solve the biggest difficulty, the construction of a scene. We need to build more seeable and tasteable images and feelings into the inorganic constructions. |
