With an increasing in people's attention to ecological issus and residential environment, waterfront plant landscape has already become an important issue in landscape design for residential communities. In this thesis, we investigated the allocation of waterfront plant landscape in residential communities in Shanghai on the basis of ecology, aesthetics, horticultural biology, and made comprehensive assesement on the space and patterns of waterfront plant allocation for the areas mentioned.Based on vast interviews and surveys, the thesis makes a careful investigation on the situation of waterfront plant landscape in residential communities in Shanghai and organizes a clear list of the tree species being used there. I assessed the patterns of planting allocation in such 5 main types of space named as open space, semi-open space, covered space, closed space and mixed space. Meanwhile, a best plan for planting allocation is given and analysis on each pattern of allocation is made out. As for the patterns of lower appraisal in plant allocation, the author also analyzes the commentators'opinions and proposes the suggestions to improve the situation.With the help of improved patterns of waterfront planting allocation in residential landscape and the theoretical data obtained in the thesis, the author aims to enrich the theory of planting landscape design and provide a referential theoretical basis for landscape designers in the field of waterfront planting landscape in residential communities in Shanghai.
