With the developments of CAD & CAM in product and the improving requirements for mechatronics, human-computer communication environment in natural language is the necessity to intellectualized system which is the tendency in future. Ellipsis recovering of natural language understanding (NLU) technique is applied to product design in this paper by conversing the understanding results extracted from the analysis of users'requirements describing in natural language to the requirements or parameters of conceptual design for supporting following design as well as providing users a fine interface.Introduce the methods of syntax analysis and semantic analysis, according to the system of natural language understanding, we discuss the methods and theories of discourse analysis.The basic theory of the ellipsis phenomenon was researched in this paper based on the actuality of ubiquitous ellipsis. The methods of ellipsis recovering was proposed based on the theories of noun clustering, event clustering and event association, and then the process of the realizing ellipsis semantic component with the clustering analysis, the association analysis, the concept's connotation and extension relations in the field was dealed with in detail.The domain NLU ellipsis recovering system is designed and realized according to the ellipsis recovering model.At last, the ellipsis recovering is applied to the design of the Man-machine interface in requirement analysis of machine design.
