With the rapid economy development of our country, the protection and maintain to the existing structure is the concern and research focus to the civil engineering. An advanced composite material named Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry for strengthening purposes as an alternative to traditional strengthening material. Several attractive properties such as high tensile strength high efficiency, corrosion resistance, not increase the dead weight and simple construction make it widely used in strengthening field. The bond strength between FRP and steel structure is the important factor that affects the bond performance. The well bond behavior between FRP and steel structure is the precondition of the load transfer and working together. Also, the bond performance between FRP and steel structure is an important research topic of the steel structure strengthened with externally bonded FRP.In this paper, CFRP and GFRP are used for research. Based on predecessor theory and experimental study foundation, the paper focuses on following items:1. The bond performance between fiber reinforced polymer and steel structure was studied by experiment on a bend-pull test set-up. The effects of three parameters (the bond length, the thickness of the FRP sheet, FRP-to -steel width radio) on bond performance are discussed in this paper,2. According to the process of failure of test specimens, the failure along the adhesive interface of the FRP-bonded steel specimens are described, and the causation and forms of the failure are analyzed.3. Based on material mechanics, the equations of interfacial shear stress are deduced and the distribution of the shear stress is studied.4. In this paper, the distribution of the strain along the cross section is studied.5. In this paper, the normal stress in the adhesive interface is discussed and the distribution of the shear stress is analyzed by change the bond length and bond thickness through the linear elastic finite element analysis.
