As a kind of large space, atriums are becoming more and more popular nowadays. However, such characteristics as opening, large volume and introducting of natural source make it more difficult than in normal building space to design, organize and control the thermal environment in atriums. Many literatures have discussed the prediction and simulation method of atrium thermal environment. However, there is no literature provide dynamic distributive simulation of atrium thermal environment. The goal of this research is to determine the key factors affecting thermal environment of atriums, and to develop suitable simulation tool for dynamic simulation. The development is based on the dynamic simulation tool DeST.This paper first analyzes the factors affecting thermal environment of atriums, and then analyze the mathematic models of atrium's thermal process. A combined dynamic simulation method is given to predicting the thermal environment. To realize this method, the problem of calculating solar radiation on both the inner and outer surfaces of atrium must be fistly solved. And then, the paper gives two models analyzing the flow and temperature field in atriums.one is Block Model, and the other is CFD-data-fitted method. The two models both can describe the thermal environment and they cost tolerable time. The paper also gives the detail how the new method incorporated into DeST.At the end of this paper, we using the developed program to analysis three typical issues and some conclusions were drawn, which provide demos to researchers and designers.
