A Primary Study On Urban Intermediary Pedestrian Space Design

This dissertation brings the concept of urban intermediary space to futher explain urban pedestrian space which is composite and complex, including the function of traffic, commerce, entertainment, recreation and sociality. The item of'Intermedium'is to emphasize the composite functions and various possibilities that are offered pedestrians to experience. And the item of'Pedestrain Space'is referred to that traffic part of walking streets, commercial street and plazas in the urban open space. These intermediary pedestrian spaces are different from the urban parks and other centralized green spaces because they function in the people daily lives. People have to go through these pedestrian spaces every day and they have to live with them. And this is the necessity of the discussion.The main content of this dissertation is about the types, the characteristic of the urban pedestrian spaces and the behaviors of the pedestrians and some relative theory. Researching on all these aspects is in order to come up with the designing principles which is adapted in Chinese contemporary situation.
