Ship hull optimization is the most important procedure to improve the resistance performance and operational economy of the ship. Prediction of ship resistance is usually based on ship model tests. If the resistance requirements are not fulfilled, a modification of the hull shape is undertaken and another test is carried out. This process could be called"manual optimization". Another interesting possibility is to combine a CFD method and a mathematical optimization method together for hull lines optimization. The whole procedure is fully automatic and no user interference is required during the optimization. This is an"automatic optimization"system. In this paper, an"Automatic Optimization"platform for ship hull optimization is presented by integrating the hull form modification, CFD computation, design space exploration and design optimization together. This platform is applied to the bow optimization of the submarine DTRC Model 5470 from USA Naval Surface Warfare Center. With a RNG k ?εturbulent model, the steady three-dimensional viscous flow around a submarine is solved. Then the resistance performance of submarine is calculated and analyzed. The Design of Experiment method is used to reduce the times of computation and then the Response Surface Model is created to search the best result in the whole designed space. The optimization results are validated through the model towing tests carried out in ship model towing tank of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the presented"Automatic Optimization"platform...
