Study On The History Of Xiamen Early-modern City Planning

This case study comes from the project of the State Social Science Fund-Study on the history of Chinese early-modern city planning(1840-1949), and the project of the excellent youthful teacher of Ministry of Education-the historical study on paradigms of Chinese early-modern city planning. From the perspective of history research in city planning, this paper put great emphasis on the study of development of Xiamen early-modern city planning, the content of the city planning and old city renovation.And analyzed the characteristic of Xiamen city planning during early-modern period, as well as feature of planning thought and practice of the old city renovation. Discuss the relationship between the city planning and culture, and transformation of city planning thought.The paper consists of seven chapters.The first chapter is introduction, which describes the origin, the significance, the object and content, the method, the research framework and the present condition of research about this study oversea and in China. The purpose of the introduction is to offer a theoretical background of this thesis.The second chapter first describes series of past experiences connected with Xiamen from the perspective of the history of city formation, then analyses the impetus of formation and development of Xiamen including aspects of physical geography, commerce and emigration, last discusses the relationship between overseas Chinese and early-modern city.The third, forth and fifth chapters are the main body of the paper. Based on its own character and the change of politics, economy and society, the paper defines 4 phases of commercial port grown up(1843-1920), renovation of old city(1920-1938), construction during occupied by Japan(1938-1945), construction and development after the war(1945-1949), and gives the reasons. The paper reviews the content of each phases, researches the construction of concession and renovation of old city and studies the development of city planning administrative institutions. The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the historical material and literature to outline the venation of the development of early-modern city planning.The sixth chapter is analysis of the historical characteristics of early-modern city planning of Xiamen, mainly researches the forming of the city pattern and the relationship between the city planning and culture, and analyses the characteristic of utilization and management of land in city planning and transformation of city planning thought.The seventh chapter is a summing-up of this paper and review about the research of early-modern city planning of Xiamen, and previews the after studying.The paper purposes to gain an revelation from the study, especially the study of the old city renovation, provides a reference for Chinese city planning and old city renovation in new period.
