Ranking and calculation methods are combined in structural appraisal forexisting structure. The reliability of existing structure is not involved. From the viewof practical application, the aseismic reliability for existing masonry structure isanalyzed along with engineering cases. The current reliability theory is briefly reviewed here. Due to the difficulty todetermine the fault model for the whole system, the development of systemreliability falls behind the development of member reliablity. This paper applies asimplified method for evaluating the reliablity for the strucural system, which isbased on the analytical hierarchy process and the first-order second-moment method.Combination of the reliability of members by different weighing parameters(ratio ofload vs. resistance with some modifications) is defined as the storey reliability. Theminimum value of the storey reliability is defined as the reliability of the wholestructural system. The shear failure model of wall is the main fault model of wall member underearthquake. The benefit fuction is defined as the shear resistant capacity of the wallminus the corresponding earthquake reaction. The formula of the shear resistantcapacity of wall in the current design code can be used here. The resistant capacityfactor and the load factor of the benefit fucution are discussed here. Modifiedcoefficients should be considered by the service duration. An engineering case is presented here to demonstrate the use of practicalanalytical method for aseismic reliability of exisitng masonry structure. The result ofstructural reliability analysis, is unsatisfactory with the current national stantadrds, , which has nearly correspond with the conclusions by structural appraisal method. The aseismic reliability of this structure strengthened by different methods is alsocalculated and the effectiveness of retrofit is hen proved.
