| On the basis of studying the history of the traditional city square, the connotation ofthe modem city square as well as the relations between the square environment andvisitors behavior, we have analyzed the city property of the public space, investigatedWuhan Jianghanlu Shopping Street, Hankou River Beach and Shouyi Square. The resultsshow that nearly 30% people attributed the strong strengths of Jianghanlu Shopping Streetto its historic significance. This reminds us historic significance is one of the importantelements for people-oriented square design. Most people visit Hankou River Beach sincea lot of large-scale public performance or activities are often held there; Shouyi Square iswell-known for its special culture background. This also reminds us recreation functionand culture background are important elements of square design. The data analysisobtained from the investigation and questionnaire sent to the visitors in Wuhan HongshanSquare shows that the highest density visitors distribute in the part which plays the shortcut role between the north and south main road which suggests the special traffic functionof the square. The peak number of the visitors is appeared in the morning and evening fortaking excising activities. People who are favorable in doing excises at the square arerelated to their ages, there are absolutely more old people than the middle and young agesdoing excises at the square; The elegant artworks in the square are the indispensablecomponents in the square environment arts. Taking the advantage of adding someartworks in the square will make people feeling well and attract more and more peoplecoming to the square. The favorable environment and available activity space of thesquare are main elements for Hongshan Square attracting the visitors. In terms ofHongshan Square, visitors wish there should more shading place and green area andcomfortable couches. Finally, the paper emphasizes the people-oriented square designshould adhere to the people-oriented principle, taking good consideration of people's psychology, stressing the recreation function of the city square to meet the most people'scommon needs. |
