Professor Ge Ruliang, as a representative of Chinese "modern vernacular architecture" performers, created a series of outstanding "modern vernacular" architectural pieces in last 1980's. These works had a great impact on Chinese architectural circle at that time. Today, how modern Chinese architecture reacts to the trend of globalization has become a hot topic to be discussed on focus. It would be important for us to study Mr. Ge Ruliang's "modern vernacular" works systematically, so as to understand clearly the special development of Chinese modern architecture, reconstruct its history, and recover the historical confidence. This dissertation is divided into five chapters. On one side, the life of Mr. Ge Ruliang and his architecture works in 1980's were studied. On the other side, by analyzing the resources of his creature and his thoughts, and by explaining both the "modern" and "vernacular" characteristics reflected from his architecture creatures, we showed the historical meaning of Mr. Ge Ruliang's creatures, as well as the importance of "modern vernacular architecture" of 1980's to Chinese modern architecture development, and proposed one resolution to modern Chinese architecture as how to keep its own characteristics under the impact of globalization.
