With the decreasing of cable costs and the development of power network rebuilding, the cable is being widely used. Because of its increasing number and prolonged working time and some more influences, the transmission lines often get in trouble. How to detect the fault and identify its location is a question of great concern. But, until now, there haven't any efficient methods of fault location. This paper is an application research on the algorithm of Bayesian spectrum estimation. According to the shortage of fault detection algorithms at present, a new algorithm is brought out which can pinpoint the location of the fault using the phase of emission impulse and echo impulse. Because the maximum likelihood method is Used in this algorithm, the estimation precision is improved. Results of simulations show this algorithm is effective and the resolution improves to 0.01%.In the experiment, this paper designs a fault detection device based on SYWV-75-5 wired TV cable. The signal from the RF generator is input into the cable, the backward wave and the incident wave add at the input point, and a Standing Wave is generated. Then we gathered the information at the entrance of the cable. In the process of analysis, Bayesian fault detection algorithm is used. The result of the simulation reveals that the resolution is 0.1m. So this detection method can locate faults accurately and has good application prospect.
