Landfill sites will be reused for the development of cities in the future. It is necessary to reinforce the landfill site to make it a suitable foundation, before which we have to do research about the improvement of municipal solid waste (MSW). Difficulties in studying MSW treatment are associated with the high organic content, high void ratio, low cohesion of the material. How these characters effect the treatment of MSW is what we should be concerned about.A series of laboratory experiments are conducted to work out the problems mentioned above. Because laboratory tests are easy to repeat and have fewer influence factors.1.Cement is used to improve the foundation of MSW and its shape and strength are formed in leachate, which has great influence on the strength of cement. The main ions' s influences on the strength of cement are presented in this study.2.MSW has high organic content which also has effect on the strength of improved MSW. The decomposition of MSW and the strength of cement affect each other because cement and MSW coexist. Fresh, fast degrading and stable degrading MSW are mixed with different contents of cement to determine their strength.3.The standard for soil test method is not suitable for MSW because MSW and soil have different characters. Strength of MSW is affected by different standards for soil test method .Strength-strain relation of the improved MSW is analyzed based on the triaxial test results and stress-strain relation.
