In order to get the objective result, the choice of the model parameter is acommitted step in the dam design demonstration and safety evaluation. As therestriction of the laboratory experiments, the simulation is not according with thereality sometimes. The method of back analysis based on in-situ observation data ofdam or information of on-site large-sized rolling test, has become an importantmeans to carry on dam safety analysis. Therefore, it is of great significance to studythe theories and methods of back analysis and then apply it to project. In this paper, on the foundation of reading lots of domestic and foreign relatedliterature, firstly, the back analysis principle of model parameters are understoodthoroughly; secondly, the back analysis method based on observation date isdiscussed; finally, the back analysis program based on IGA is exploited. Further, parameters of Duncan-Chang model are gained by utilization of on-site load boardtests information, then, combining with the project example of SHUIBUYA Dam,has confirmed that the IGA in the application of embankment dam back analysis isfeasible. The main contents are as follows:1. The principle and the shortcoming of GA are analyzed. By making use of IGAand FEM synthetically, a model used to back-analyze parameters is built. It is thetheoretical foundation of back analysis in the follow text.2. After research on on-site load board tests of SHUIBUYA dam, Duncan-Changparameters of rockfill are gotten by applying the IGA to the back analysis of materialparameters of rockfill. Under the consideration of historic initial stress, the authorconducts the FEM analysis by utilizing the result of the back analysis, and the resultsare according with that of on-site load board tests. By comparing the inversionachievement and the triaxial test result, the two groups of parameter reflect the samedeformational characteristics of the rockfill.3. Through the reorganization of settlement data from typical section in dam, further, by comparison and analysis of measuring and calculated settlement, thisresult has been achieved, which is that calculated settlement of three-dimensionalnon-linear finite element analysis based on parameters gained by back analysisreflects the real settlement of dam. Therefore, the process of three-dimensional staticfinite element analysis is described in detail; what is more, calculated results areanalyzed below.
